“Music saved my life.” — Arturo Sandoval

A protégé of the legendary Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval was born in 1949 in Artemisa, Cuba, and began studying classical trumpet at the age of twelve. His early training laid the foundation for a career that would span continents and genres—ultimately making him one of the most celebrated and influential musicians of our time.

Arturo’s journey from a small town outside Havana to the world’s greatest concert halls is a story of profound resilience, passion, and artistic brilliance. Inspired by jazz even while living under a government that viewed it with suspicion, he defied the odds to pursue the music that stirred his soul. With Gillespie’s mentorship, Arturo emerged as a virtuoso trumpeter and flugelhornist, a master of Latin jazz, Afro-Cuban traditions, classical music, and a composer and pianist of remarkable depth.

He has since released over 40 albums and appeared on hundreds more, performing with the most iconic musicians across genres and generations. His collaborations stretch from jazz legends to pop luminaries, a testament to his musical fluency and universal appeal.

Arturo is a 10-time Grammy Award winner, 6-time Billboard Award winner, and Emmy Award recipient for his unforgettable score to HBO’s For Love or Country, the film that told the story of his life and defection from Cuba. In 2013, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the highest honors an American civilian can receive. In 2024, he was named a Kennedy Center Honoree, recognizing his extraordinary lifetime contribution to American culture through the performing arts.

He also holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Notre Dame, and is a tenured professor emeritus at Florida International University, where he mentored and inspired countless young musicians.

Yet for all his accolades, Arturo remains grounded in gratitude and guided by purpose.

He often says that music saved his life, and it’s that deep belief in the transformative power of music that led him to create the Arturo Sandoval Institute (ASI)—a nonprofit organization committed to providing young musicians with access to instruments, scholarships, mentorship, and educational opportunities. ASI was born out of Arturo’s conviction that talent should never be limited by circumstance. Through the institute, he has helped thousands of students pursue their own musical dreams, particularly those from underserved communities.

Impressive as it is expansive, Arturo’s career is not only defined by his extraordinary skill, but by his generosity of spirit. He sees music not as a platform for ego, but as a universal language for learning, healing, and connection. Whether performing on a world stage or mentoring a student in a practice room, Arturo Sandoval continues to embody the belief that every note has the power to change a life.
